It's been a minute hasn't it? About a year, actually a little over a year, since my last post. I'll be honest I didn't intend to take a year off it just kind of happened. You'll notice I didn't apologize. I'm not sorry I haven't posted in a year. Well haven't posted here. I've still be pretty active on my Yount blog. But the hobby got kind of dark there for a while and I really didn't have too many nice things to say and you know the old axiom, "If you can't say anything nice..."

But while the hobby had to contend with the influx of new "collectors" and the insane conduct of people buying up all the retail to resell, ect, ect, I had a bit of a renaissance with my love of collecting. In January of 2022 I made a very time consuming push to not only update my want list but also add my trade list to Trading Card Database. Before that I had only made a handful of trades on the site and most of my previous trading had been done through this blog, but in less than a year I had over 100 trades with TCDb's trade platform (I've just surpassed 200). And almost all of those were trades proposed by others.

I will say that time investment has more than paid for itself, just in the amount of unwanted cards I've gotten rid of and the amount of cards that have been sent to me. I've been able to fill in holes in my team sets, finish off set's I'd almost given up on, and managed to turn some of my lower end autos and relic cards into the same for the teams I want. It's been a very enjoyable experience and I've only had a couple of issues with some of my trades, but every trade I've entered into has been completed.

I also spent a lot of time during the pandemic sorting my boxes upon boxes of dupes and commons into team lots and have been slowly selling them off on eBay to help pay for my habit. I still have teams left anyone wants to take a look or make an offer

https://www.ebay.com/usr/cynicalbuddha

If you've been a reader for the past decade, you may have noticed or not, that I didn't run my annual Super Bowl or World Series Contest. That was a hard one for me, but I think it was a good decision to take a break. I always love the interaction I have with you guys during that contest and I did miss it.

Will I be back to posting a lot on here? Probably not, but I think I'll try to be a little more consistent and put out a post more than once a year.
cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3390422136858076282.post-18955055762786972412022-03-05T16:49:00.001-09:002022-03-05T16:49:38.153-09:00Hobby Nomenclature Part 3 - Inserts

Continuing my series on Nomenclature of the Hobby let's talk about inserts!!

First let's clarify and define exactly what an insert is. An insert is something other than a base card inserted into packaging. This could be almost anything (as we'll see). This shouldn't be confused with a subset. Something I'll likely do a separate post on later. A subset is (as I'm going to define it) is a themed set of cards different from the base set design (sometimes) but numbered into the base set.

Baseball cards themselves started off as inserts, in tobacco, candy, and other products almost since the birth of the sport itself. But extras being inserted into card packs started in the 1960s. And generally the 1961 Topps Baseball Stamps and Magic Rub-offs inserted inserted into 1961 Topps Baseball packs are considered the first true inserts.

1961 Topps Stamps

1961 Topps Magic Rub-Offs

Topps over the year's would insert lot's of different kinds of inserts, what I call Added Value Content (AVC) in the form of stickers and coins.

1964 Topps Coin

1963 Peel-Offs sticker

And the first actual baseball card insert card came in 1965 with Topps' Embossed insert set.

Over the year's Topps continued to insert lots of different inserts, but usually it was only one set. Fleer and Donruss also added inserts into their packs, where Topps had sued and won about including gum with their cards Donruss opted for puzzles and Fleer for team logo stickers. In 1986 Fleer started inserting it's All-Star insert into wax and cello packs and Topps likewise offered inserts like it's Glossy All-Stars and Rookies available in the three blister rack packs. But it wasn't until the 1990s that inserts started being the AVC to chase. And none was more sought after than the Donruss' serial numbered Elite Series and Legend Series, 1991 Donruss also had one of the first large scale Autograph chases with the Ryne Sandberg Signature Series autographed card numbered to 5000 (but we'll save that for the post on hits)

Still the number inserts per release was relatively small with just a few to chase in each set, but the late 1990s really opened the flood gates. With a bunch of new card companies trying to hustle for those collector's dollars unique and inventive inserts were the main tactic. The dominance of inserts as the main AVC for a cards set only lasted a few year's until relics and autographs became regularly inserts and they almost become filler after hits became guaranteed per box.

In the mid 2000s a lot of base inserts, even some with low serial numbering were designed with the relic, autograph, and relic autograph parallels in mind. Some of the inserts in issues like Donruss Classics were a prime example of this.

Let's fast forward to today. Card companies still use inserts as a main AVC for releases, along with hits (autos and relics), and parallels. And most inserts issued today also have parallels and some even still have relic, autograph, and relic autograph variations (we'll talk more about those when we talk about hits). Topps 2022 Series 1 baseball has about 125 inserts (with all the parallels and variations) to chase in the product. That's a lot of cards that aren't base cards!! But this allows them (for better or worse) to print a lot of base cards and package a lot of packs, boxes, and cases. We are well past the point where a collector could conceivably try to collect them all.

The last couple year's has seen a new trend where companies are starting to insert very rare (even if they aren't serial numbered) inserts. Like Panini's Color Blast, Downtown, and Whammy inserts. Which Topps seems to finally have taken notice of.

I realize this post has been almost completely baseball centric when talking about inserts. It's a very broad topic that spans all sports and many non-sports and I really was just trying to give a brief history and broad overview of what's out there. One very interesting, intense, and expensive area of inserts are the late 90s basketball issues. Specifically base card parallels.

Disclaimer: I do not consider myself a trading card expert or any kind of authority on the subject. I'm just a collector with 35 years of experience. These posts are just my opinions and are meant to be informative and educational. Feedback and/or suggestions are welcome (as long as they're civil).

First let's talk about a term you may or may not have heard of but will be popping up in the next couple posts. Added Value Content (AVC). It's a mouthful and to be fair it's not a term that actually get's used a lot with collector's, but AVC is exactly what parallels, inserts, and hits are. Basically it's why Topps, Panini, Upper Deck, or whoever can charge you more for a pack of cards. It also makes sealed products walk a thin line (if not actually cross it) of being a kind of gambling.

So for this post I'm going to be talking about parallels as they pertain to the base set of a product. Card makers also put out parallel versions of inserts and hits, but we'll cover that when we talk about those subjects.

And when I'm talking about parallels I'm talking about cards produced to parallel the base set that were inserted with the base cards and could be pulled from packs. I make this distinction because I'm not talking specifically about sets like 1975 Topps Mini, Topps Collector Edition (Tiffany) Sets, Fleer Glossy Sets, or 1991 Topps Desert Shield stamped cards. These are sets that do parallel other base sets but were released as their own product. I do however consider parallels inserted into factory sets base set parallels, yeah it can get a little confusing.

Remember there is no real authoritative entity in the card collecting community (sorry Beckett) and I'll be fair I did not do exhaustive research so please forgive if I forget anything, gloss over some things, or missed something completely. But I'm going to attempt to mark the start of the age of the parallel and that is 1992 for Baseball and 1991 for Football. The first true parallel sets came in 1991 Wild Card Football and Basketball and 1992 Topps baseball.

If you happen to have been collecting in 1991 or come across some old Wild Cards, Wild Cards gimmick was the insertion of cards with numbered stripes of various denominations (5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 1000). If you pulled one of those number striped cards you could send that card into Wild Cards and they would exchange it for the same number of base cards of that player.

The higher stripe cards were very rare and today those 100 and 1000 stripe cards can command a pretty penny.

Topps' gold foil parallel appeared the next year and is considered the first true parallel set. Inserted at different odds depending on the packaging, they fell about 1 per box or 1:36 packs.

And we've had parallels in packs every since (mostly). I do remember when the gold cards hit the market collector's ate them up!! It didn't take long for other card companies to follow suit. Examples that come to mind are the 1994 Score Gold Rush parallels and 1995 Donruss Press Proofs, and the 1994 Upper Deck Collector's Choice Silver and Gold Signatures.

The first serial numbered parallel cards would come from late to the Parallel game Fleer with it's Flair Showcase parallels and Pinnacles Totally Certified. But the effect of cards having serial numbering and defining their print run allowed collector's and sellers to kind of gauge value based on rarity.

Fast forward to the last couple years and Topps and Panini seems to be in a competition to see who can produce the set with the most parallels. 2021 Panini Prizm baseball had 43 different color parallels!! Topps flagship and chrome baseball had over 30. That's kind of insane. Again we can go back to the AVC. Inserting parallels, especially serial numbered parallels, helps companies justify their products higher costs (along with guaranteed hits and inserts).

The insane number of parallels put out today also gave rise to a popular goal in collecting and that's putting together a player rainbow, or collecting one of every parallel. Pretty hard with 1 of 1s, in the parallel line up. But most collector's get goals and a level they want to collect down to or an afford to.

Depending on the set and product the base set may have many different kinds of parallels. So let's look at some of the more common you may see out there in the card market from some current releases.

Currently color parallel or border parallels are the most common type of parallel card you will encounter. And the parallel is just what it sounds like the base border color (usually white or plain) will be replaced with a color or design.

Another type of base parallel that is similar to the color or design front is the framed parallel. This was popular with Donruss Diamond King sets in the mid 2000s, Upper Deck Masterpieces, and with Topps Gypsy Queen sets up until fairly recently. And while this parallel seems to have fallen out of favor it may make a comeback again. Here are a few examples from my Yount collection.

One last front parallel you may see are cards that are foil stamped. Again I'm thinking specifically of Topps' Vintage Stock parallel, but there have been other sets in the past that have had parallel sets with different card stock types. The Topps parallels are serial numbered and are hard to miss amongst the shiny slick base cards. One other example that comes to mind is the 1996 Fleer baseball set, where the base set had a matte finish and the parallel set was glossy.

Love them or hate them (and there are plenty of people who do) parallels are here to stay. He was very upfront about his rookie status. He had pulled a serial numbered red foil parallel out of 2022 Topps Series 1 and had no idea what it was or why it was different. I was very happily surprised about the hobby twitter support that came to the aid of this new collector and it just helped remind me that there are people finding this hobby for the first time or even better coming back to the hobby, which seems to be a common theme during the pandemic. It also helped ground me to the fact while I've been in and out of the hobby since the mid-80s the hobby is almost a completely different monster and it can be down right confusing. So to help with that I thought I'd kind of do a primer on current hobby nomenclature. So if you're a seasoned collector these posts might not be for you, but I would love your feedback on anything I might have missed or you think should be included.

I'm going to break these posts up into 4 areas. Hits (what they are and what you can expect), parallels (why are there so darn many of them), packaging (what's the difference between hobby and retail), and lingo (what is a rookie card?).

Let's start with packaging. I'm going to focus on modern products, what you can expect to see if you go into your local Walmart or Local Card Shop (LCS). There are lots of great vintage packaging products you don't see anymore, but that might be a post for another time. Let's go shopping!!!

I think I might have to explain the lingo as we go as it's pretty integrated into the hobby. So let's start with walking into your LCS or rather your local card shop or store, could also be used for your local comic book shop, which usually also carries sport cards and non sports cards. At your LCS you are going to find what we call hobby boxes. This is card packaging made for card stores. You may also find more retail oriented packages as well, but I'll leave those till be head on over to Walmart to look for cards. As of right now we have 3 big players in the sport card market. Topps which has the exclusive baseball card license (and was recently bought by Fanatics, also another post for another time), Panini which currently holds the exclusive NFL, NBA, and NASCAR licenses, and Upper Deck which has the exclusive NHL license. Panini also has a license with the MLB Players Association (at least for a couple more years) so they can produce baseball cards, they just can't use logos or team names. Each company puts out their own products and has different brands, like Topps has Bowman, Panini has all the old Donruss brands and Upper Deck has all the old Fleer brands, etc. The two main kinds of hobby products are hobby boxes and hobby jumbo boxes. The difference being the number of cards per pack and the number of packs per box. Also different products and box types will have different amounts of hits. Will get to hits later, but basically a hit is considered a card that is autographed or has a piece of relic imbedded in it, or both.

Using Topps 2022 Series 1 baseball as an example a hobby box has 24 - 14 card packs. Topps also released a lot of there products in jumbo boxes. 2022 Topps Series 1has a configuration of 10 packs per box with 46 cards per pack. The big difference between the two besides number of cards is that a hobby box has one guaranteed hit and a jumbo box has three. Usually.

So adding to our dictionary, when someone in the hobby refers to a hobby box we are talking about the 24 pack box available at your LCS and if we mention a Jumbo box or Hobby Jumbo we are talking about the 10 pack box with 3 hits.

Now let's walk on down to a retail store and see what you might find there. Over the years card companies offered a bunch of different packaging options for retail stores these are what you are most likely to find right now.

Blaster boxes. A blaster box is a small box of cards that usually has somewhere between 7 and 10 retail packs inside. Blasters can also feature exclusive parallels, like Topps Royal Blue Walmart parallels or Panini's Rapture parallel, they can also feature exclusive cards (usually manufactured relics, will get to what those are in a later post) as a bonus.

Hanger boxes. These are small boxes that have a tab attached that can be hung from a store display hook, hence the hanger part. These usually have one pack inside of about 40-60 or so cards. These too may have exclusive content specific to just hanger boxes.

Retail fat packs or just fat packs (not to be confused with hobby jumbo packs). These are just larger packs around 30 to 40 cards that like the hanger boxes are meant to be hung on a display hook. I have yet to see Topps Series 1 fat packs, but they might be released later, which also sometimes happens. And again these can sometimes have exclusive content just for this package type.

Blister packs. These are packages where the card packs are on a cardboard backer and have a clear plastic shell or blister holding them on. I had a nice afternoon enjoying the game at home. I really had no horse in the race so I was really just hoping for a great competitive game (I might have been leaning on rooting for the Bengals just a little). And boy did we get that! It was a lot lower scoring than a lot of you predicted, but how can you complain when the game was so close the entire way and really came down to the last drive. I'm glad Stafford and Donald get rings and wow Kupp was impressive, but Burrow, Mixon, and Higgins were equally fun to watch. If the Bengals can keep that team intact they will be ruling the AFC North, heck maybe all of the AFC for some time.

Ahem, let's get down to what you all are here for. We had 4 teams going into the finals. Two had who picked the Bengals and two for the Rams. No one correctly predicted the opponent so we have to move to total points and boy did our two correct picks way over predict that! But by the margin of just one point CaptKirk42 is our grand prize winner!!!!!!

bbcardz - LA Rams over Kansas City Chiefs, 72 points, 3 field goals PIMP

Twinkiller on TCDb - Bengals over Packers, (Yeah that's right,) 54 points, 4 FG

CaptKirk42 - Rams over Bills 71 points 5 FGs

Huskerfan22 - Cincinnati over Green Bay, 59 points, 5 FGS tcdb: Huskerfan22

A complete correct guess with tie breakers would have been:

Bengals over Rams, 43 Pts, 3 FGs

Kirk just happens to be a Rams fan, I guess that's not too surprising. People who promoted the contest got an extra entry. I will say I'm sad to see my Packers eliminated, but really they only have themselves to blame or at least the special teams. Both Saturday games were pretty surprising. But the two Sunday games holy cow, what a roller coaster!!!! But with both #1 seeded teams gone and Tom Brady and the Buccaneers it's easier to just say how many we have left than how many we lost. Going into the Conference Championships we only have 11 teams left!!! I'll be honest I thought the Bills were going to pull off another upset and we'd have lost even more. As of right now I think we only have two picks that have an opponent still in the playoffs. Could come down to the wire and I'm sure next Sunday will be a great day for football.

With that said here are the picks and those remaining, I'll have another update after the conference championships and thanks again for everyone who entered!!!

<p style="background-color: white; What a great long weekend of football. Well at least a great long weekend. All but two of the Wild Cards games were blowouts, but those two had a lot of drama. We didn't lose too many, only 6, plus the three unknown entries since no one has come forward to claim them. They'll be removed going into the divisional games, unless someone comes forward quickly. Either way we have a large group moving forward and I can't wait to see my Packers next weekend. Alrighty good luck everybody I'll have a update after the games next weekend.

<p style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; Been a busy couple days and I've got a busy couple more. But wow what an exciting ending to the Bengals-Raiders game. The Patriots-Bills not so much. But here we are the start of my 12th yes, 12th Annual contest I want to thank everyone who entered. We had 51 people put picks in this year! I'm pretty sure that's an all time record for any of my contests so thank you for those that helped spread the word. And it looks like my Packers are heavy favorites. One hiccup we have 3 entries that got submitted by an unknown persons. I'm assuming this is because they either weren't logged in to Blogger or don't have an account and I tried to get the word out, and a lot of people were really great about making sure their twitter or TCDb handles were included. So if one of these three unknown entries is yours please let me know ASAP, as they will likely be removed after Wildcard weekend if I can't put a name to the entry. Also please look over your entry. I copied the entries over from the official sign up post, but you never know.

Here are your official entries. Good luck everybody. But that means it's time for another one of my Almost the Easiest Contests on the Web!!! I can't believe we are already on my 12 Annual one.

Same rules as always. I just want you to tell me who's going to win the Super Bowl. That's it. Well...in all likelyhood more than one of you will guess correctly, so we are going to need a couple tie breakers.

So I also want you to tell me who the opponent will be, the Total combined number of points (both teams remember, and closets get's it this isn't the Price is Right) and just incase we need one more tie breaker how many total field goals in the game (again both teams combined)

So your entry should look something like this:

Green Bay over Kansas City, 75 points, 4 FGs

Now I know you're asking, "Hey CB what am I going to win?" It never fails that if I was to offer up a prize it would not be to everyone's likely so just like my last World Series contest I'm going to make a prize pack specifically crafted to the winner, based on their team(s) of preference.

But wait there's more. Like always there's going to be a door prize, just for signing up!! And the door prize will also be crafted for the winner. And if promote this contest, on your blog, twitter, YouTube video, or what ever tube you use. You'll also receive an extra entry into the door prize contest. But Please Please Please make sure you let me know you did it and a link to the pimp would be great.

OK there you go. You have until Noon Alaska Time/4 pm EST on Saturday January 15th to enter, right before the Bengals and Raiders game.

Here are you choices:

AFC

Kansas City Chiefs
Pittsburgh Steelers
Buffalo Bills
New England Patriots
Cincinnati Bengals
Las Vegas Raiders
Tennessee Titans

NFC

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Philadelphia Eagles

Dallas Cowboys

San Francisco 49ers

Los Angelese Rams

Arizona Cardinals

Green Bay Packers

Good Luck everybody!!
cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com65tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3390422136858076282.post-87560555229620808742022-01-05T10:00:00.001-09:002022-01-05T10:00:51.734-09:00Oh what a year - A room full of elephants that we should probably talk about
Oh hello there, yep it's me again. I've been sitting in the cold dark Alaskan winter contemplating life, the universe, and well, everything. It's been a crazy couple years hasn't it? I apologize for the lack of content. I really just haven't felt like sitting down to write blog posts. And the few times I have sat down to do it the post turns into a bitch session and I've been making a very concerted effort to be a positive force in the hobby and the universe, so a lot of those posts go unpublished or just get deleted.

But here we are, a new year and there's lots to talk about. Over the last two year's we've seen a huge gain in popularity in the trading card hobby. Whether it was people stuck at home during the pandemic rekindling their passion for a hobby, new people finding the hobby, or people realizing just how lucrative it can be to sell and resell sport cards to make a buck for better or worse the last couple years has seen a huge shift in the hobby landscape with hints of the 90s boom.

Let's talk about what's been happening.

1. Retail trading cards become the hot new thing. It wasn't that long ago I can remember reports that retail outlets like Walmart and Target were considering not stocking sports cards anymore because they weren't selling. And let's be honest in the hobby retail product was a joke if you were looking for high end hits. But retail was also a nice cheap alternative to pricy hobby boxes and packs if you were a set builder. Now we've got fist fights breaking out in stores and Target actually halting sales of the products due to safety concerns. People were camping out in front of stores waiting for restocks and then clearing out shelves. Stores started putting limits on the number of boxes you could buy at one time and moved cards behind counters and registers. Then of course a lot of this product ended up on the secondary market on eBay and being sold on Twitter accounts and the like at huge mark ups. I personally was lucky I was able to find enough Topps Baseball to put most of my base sets together, but even up here in Alaska the shelves were usually bare.

2. Card grading companies got swamped!! I'm not a guy who sends in cards to get graded, but I can respect and understand those that do and the value of having a supposedly impartial 3nd party service grade a card to establish and then preserve condition. But wow I think even the grading card companies were a little surprised by just what happened. And I'm talking mainly about the big three, Beckett (BGS), PSA, and SGC. The companies at one time had to halt submissions and then jacked prices up to a point that it really limited what was worth send in to get graded. Not all of these companies reacted the same, but all got blindsided with an unprecedented amount of demand while trying to tackle pandemic restrictions and dealing with employee safety.

3. COMC. Oh COMC. I'm sure if you're reading this blog you know what and how COMC does what they do. And the unique service COMC offers to the hobby can be seen by just how many growing pains the company has bumbled and stumbled their way through and survived. The first real challenge came after COMC and Beckett parted ways. COMC had a deal with Beckett for use of their checklists for listing purposes, but COMC also used Becketts pricing information for help inform both sellers and buyers what their cards were worth. It was kind of a golden time for the hobby because you could see the Beckett value for cards without having to pay for the service. This is likely why the two parted ways year's ago. But that led to a scramble for COMC to not only produce it's own checklists, but to document that production. And they did that through it's crowd sourced challenges. This led to a long wait time for processing. The second big hiccup I can remember is the first time COMC upgrade facilities. Both processing and shipping times got pretty extreme, but not terrible. But the latest hurdle that COMC had to overcome, and looks like they finally have, was the pandemic. Which saw a perfect storm for the company that was trying to move to another larger facility, coupled with operating in an area of the country with some of the most strict pandemic lock down orders, while dealing with an unprecedent surge in card submissions, sales, and shipping requests. I made the mistake of placing an order in Jan of 2021, it took 8 months for my cards to ship!

4. And finally the newest and biggest elephant in the room. Fanatics. I think we (the hobby, the royal I) and probably Topps, were really blindsided when the MLB, MLBPA, and Fanatics announced their exclusive trading card deal. And then shortly after announcing they had acquired rights to the NFLPA and NBA and NBAPA. I don't think anybody was that surprised with Fanatic announced it had bought Topps' trading card business. It seemed pretty obvious that Fanatics would acquire one of the trading card companies. In 2009, it was a big shock to see Panini, a little sticker company from Italy, scoop up the exclusive NBA license. At least they had some experience with sports cards and stickers, but it wasn't that surprising when they bought Donruss. And in buying Donruss Panini gained instant US brand recognition and arguably one of the deepest brand catalogues in the hobby. So Fanatics, with no trading card experience would likely have to acquire one of the big three remaining companies. I had joked that Upper Deck should be their goal and then they would have licenses for all 4 US major sports leagues. But Topps seemed like the obvious and likely choice.

Since the MLB announcement there have been lots of uncertainty with what was going to happen in the hobby. I'm not saying I'm happy that Topps will continue their baseball exclusivity into the foreseeable future, but I have happy that I'll get to put my Topps flagship set together and I am looking forward to Topps flagship football again. What will happen to Panini and Upper Deck with this new juggernaut of Fanatics/Topps? Who knows? I'm a little anxious, but also very excited for the what might happen in the trading card arena. And if it all goes to hell we still have over 100 years of vintage cards to fall back on.

cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3390422136858076282.post-54009073744964307212021-11-03T09:15:00.001-08:002021-11-03T09:15:41.963-08:00Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!! We only had two people correctly guess the Braves would win the World Series, go figure they were both Braves fans. But Colbey, aka Flywheels, correctly guessed that the Braves would beat the Astros. As a matter of fact, as I stated last post, we had two people correctly guess the match-up. Which I think is a first. After looking at Colbey's entry looks like he forgot to include the games in the series, but it doesn't matter.

A fully correct pick with all the correct tie breakers would have been

Braves over Astros, in 6, 13 home runs

Here are the finalists picks.

Brett Alan - Astros over Braves, 6 games, 7 home runs.

AdamE - Astros over the Giants in 5 with 9 home runs.

dayf - Braves over White Sox 13 dingers

flywheels - Braves over Astros - 7 HRs

Ymmat - Astros over Dodgers in 7. 15 homers

Sportzcommish - Astros over Giants in 6 with 12 homeruns.

mfreeman - Astros over Dodgers, 7 games 14 HRs

Colbey will be getting a nice stack of Braves cards to add to his collection. I spent the last 10 days down visiting family in Wisconsin. It's only been 3 years, but I had a lovely time and got to bring back a big box of Wisconsin delicacies. But let's see who's still in this contest.

If your following the World Series you already know that the 117th contest has pitted the Braves against the Astros. And last night the Braves won game one.

As it sits we have 7 people who picked either the Astros or the Braves to win it all and we have two player that will have correctly guessed the correct match up. I think this is the first time I've had that going into the final round. Right now Brett has the Astros beating the Braves, and Colbey (aka Flywheels) has the Braves beating the Astros. It was a great season with a playoff spots coming down to the wire.

This year will be like year's past, but if you haven't played before the premise is very simple. I just want you to tell me who's going to win the World Series. That's it pretty simple. But since it's very likely that more than one person will pick the correct team, we need a few tie breakers. So in your pick tell me who's going to win, who the opponent will be, how many games in the series and how many total home runs will be hit in the series (both teams combined). So your entry should look something like this.

Brewers over Yankees, in 4, 15 HRs.

In year's past I've offered a single prize, but I've found that a lot of people are kind of turned off if I offer an auto of a player or team they don't like. So this year, up for grabs is a special prize pack that will be built specifically for the winner. The prize pack may include autos, relics, inserts, parallel card, rookies. It really depends on what I have in stock or what I can find on my next visit to my LCS, but trust me it'll be good. Just ask past winners.

But wait there's more!!!

Like year's past I'm also give away another prize package just for participating. This is my door prize and it too will also be tailored for the winner. Everyone who enters the contest will get an entry into the door prize drawing and if you promote this contest, on your blog, social media, YouTube channel, whatever, you'll get a second entry into the door prize drawing. Just leave a comment and link to your promotion on your entry to make sure you get your extra entry.

The door prize winner will be chosen at random but entering all the entries into a random list generator at random.org and the list will be randomized 3 times, person at the top of the list wins.

Without much of a break from regular season to the playoff that doesn't give us a lot of time to leave the contest open, but I'm going to close the contest Saturday at noon Alaska time or 4pm EST. Feel free to wait till wild card elimination games are over and I will let you change your pick up till the contest close, but amend your pick with a comment on your old pick.

Here are the teams you have to choose from

American League
Red Sox
Yankees
Tampa Bay Rays

Chicago White Sox

Houston Astros

National League

Milwaukee Brewers

Atlanta Braves

St. Louis Cardinals

San Francisco Giants

LA Dodgers

I'll post some periodic reminders throughout the week.

Good luck everybody!!!

cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com34tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3390422136858076282.post-50192891748666583412021-04-22T07:46:00.005-08:002021-04-22T14:45:17.004-08:00Cardboard for the Ages - Defining the Ages and Periods within Baseball Card hobby
It's been awhile since my last post, at least on here. Lately I've been mulling over the hobby in general. Especially this past year with the pandemic and ensuing craziness that has been the sport cards market and collectibles in general. I also collect other things, but my other main hobby would be my comic book collection. Comic books have these great Ages associate with them, the Golden and Silver ages, my personal favorite is the Bronze age of the 70's and early 80's. And baseball cards also have their labels and divisions in their 150 year or so history, although some of them aren't always so clear.

So as a thought exercise I decided to try to put together my own baseball card timeline and definition of the ages up to present.

First let me say this is just my attempt to put the hobby, specifically to baseball cards, into some order. There is no official governing body over baseball cards or the hobby and what I may think is a logical start or stopping point for a historical period in baseball cards might not be what you would choose, but I welcome the feedback.

First let's start at the beginning. In my opinion and for the purpose of this exercise I'm going to start the hobby at what I consider to be one of, if not the, first baseball card, the 1869 Peck and Snyder Cincinnati Red Stockings ad card.

The term vintage gets thrown around a lot and by some people standards vintage can start as recently as 1985. That leaves a lot of room in the vintage category and let's face it a 1985 card and 1948 Bowman are not the same breed.

So let's start at the beginning and work our way forward from 1869.

Victorian/Edwardian/Pre-WWI Period 1869-1917

Officially the Edwardian Period ended in 1910, but I wanted to encapsulate the T206 production period into this category. I also was going to end this period at 1912 for that reason, but after thinking about it it makes sense to push this to when the US entered World War I in 1917. It also gives us a pretty nice break for the next period.

Pre-War (WWII cards) Period 1918-1947

I know what you're going to say what you end the Pre-War era in 1947, but the US joined WWII in 1941. Yes that's true. But there also were no major baseball card product produced until after1948 with a few oddball and minor league exceptions, and the next period would be Post WWII so it doesn't make sense to leave a 6 year gap when almost no baseball cards were produced. If it makes you happy we could call this Pre-War/Wartime but you get the idea.

Post-War (WWII) Vintage Period 1948-1985

I know what you're going to say, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, that's a huge time span. And didn't you just say you don't think all vintage is created equal and really you think 1985 is the end of the vintage era?"

Indeed I said all that, but we are going to break this Post-War Period into some sub-groups. Eras or Ages if you will. Because while I'm not super comfortable putting the early 80s in the vintage category, mainly because it makes me feel old. The term vintage is kind of a moving target. And 1985 is an easy stopping point for the next Period after this.

So let's break down the Post-War Vintage Period

1948-1959 The Golden Age or Era of Baseball Cards

1960-1969 The Silver Age of Baseball Cards

1970-1979 The Bronze Age of Baseball Cards

1980-1985 The Modern/Aluminum/Zinc (whatever) Age of Baseball cards (edit: The Age of Expansion also as suggested)

Here it's just easier to group the post-war categories using time. Also in the this Age we get to see Topps' monopoly end.

The Junk Wax Period/Era 1986-1994

Some may argue when to start the Junk Wax Era. I've seen 1987 as a year people like to use, but up until recently you could find loads of 1986 Topps unopened product for cheap and for me that really is the start of the Junk Wax Era or Period.. Also I put the end of the Junk was Era at 1994 when the MLB strike almost killed the baseball card market. We also see the start of the Great Expansion at the end of this period.

The Modern Period 1995-2009 (The Age of Consolidation)

The first inserted baseball autograph, and I think the first one in any card product, was the 1990 Upper Deck Reggie Jackson and inserts really started popping up before 1995, so there is going to be some overlap. But for the most part the modern period of baseball cards ushered in a couple eras, first was the insert era, this started in the early nineties, but really matured in the mid to late 90's. Next up the rise of hits. While 1990 may have seen the first inserted autograph they were still pretty rare up until the early 2000s, and the first baseball relic was put into packs in 1997 Upper Deck. Of course guaranteed hits in a box would be come the norm till the last part of the 2000s.

Also during this time we saw what would be the end of the expansion of the sports card market, where lots of brands and companies entering the market and we get start seeing the Great Consolidation, where companies were going out of business or getting bought, properties and brands were being acquired by other companies and by 2009 when Panini acquired Donruss and all it's brands we pretty much have the trading card industry we have today except for one thing..

The Age of Exclusivity 2010 - Present

So here we are, the Age of Exclusivity. Topps became the sole MLB license holder in 2010 and hasn't let go of it. As a matter of fact Panini started it off with their exclusive NBA deal, then Upper Deck took over Hockey, and in 2016 Panini became the sole NFL licensee.

Within this Age we also can break it down into things like, the dawn of digital cards, online exclusives, print on-demand, and just a few days ago NFT (Non-fungible tokens).

Well there you go. What do you think? How would you divide baseball card timeline?
cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3390422136858076282.post-83033426881663801952021-02-07T19:26:00.001-09:002021-02-07T19:26:58.317-09:00Winner Winner Chicken Dinner - Almost the Easiest Super Bowl Contest on the Web Finale!!!!

Well, well, well. I have to say I'm at a loss for words. That was a completely unexpected outcome. While I have a few issues with some of the officiating and calls, that was a pretty impressive feat by the Bucs and Tom Brady. I really don't think anyone expected Kansas City to be held to under 10 points and the team didn't score a touchdown. We had thirteen players going into Super Bowl Sunday and the overwhelming majority favoring the Chiefs, but three intrepid contestants picked the Bucs to take it all. None of the three that chose Tampa Bay correctly picked the opponent, so we have to move to total points and boy did everyone think this would be a fairly high scoring game. In the end the perfect pick would have been

Tampa Bay Buccaneers over Kansas City Chiefs, 40 points, 4 FG

And the person who picked the lowest combined score is the winner is Paul from Scribbled Ink!!!! But we've finally arrived at the final round, who all got knocked out this past week? A lot. The overall concensus was for the Packers or the Chiefs to take it all and so we still have quite a few of you, plus we even had a few believe in Tom Brady. In all we lost 17 this round with a fair number of people also picking the Bills to win. Technically, all you had to do is pick the winner of the Super Bowl so there are still a bunch of you in it. However if the Chiefs pull off a back to back only one person correctly picked that match up and that was Trevor P. Of the 3 people who picked the Bucs none of them picked KC as the opponent so if Tom Brady can pull one more off we'll have to move up the line in tie breakers.
<p style="background-color: white; No big surprises really, however Mahomes exiting with a concussion was a big loss to KC especially if he can't play next week. I wrote a fairly long post and then didn't hit the publish button. I thought I'd let it cool and then go back and edit the post, maybe see if I'd missed anything I wanted to hit. And then kind of forgot about it. It got buried under other posts and other drafts and lost. I actually found the old draft and reread it. It wasn't bad, but there was a lot that had changed, timely content that's meaning had been lost, so I thought I'd just start over, because the topic is The Rules. More exactly the rules about collecting. And the only rule about collecting is there are no rules. Well other than those that we impose upon ourselves.

In essence the post is about how we each define our own collections and collecting habits. What we decided to include and exclude. Let me say I'm no psychologist so take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt.

First let's make sure I make this very clear:

THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO COLLECT!

With that I could probably just end the post. But let me try to define a collector in the broadest sense of the term. A collector is a person that accumulates things, usually with an underlying theme, bring them together for their enjoyment. Now is the guy who waits in the card aisle at Target so he can buy the enter stock of Mozaic and jack up the price on the secondary market a collector? No. Is the guy who buys a few blasters of Mozaic, opens the packs, selects the cards he wants, and then sells the rest a collector? Of course. Selling trading cards does not not make you a collector. And I will say this, as both a guy who's sold his fair share, almost all the money I've made selling cards I didn't want has gone right back into the hobby. Ahem.

Collector's tend to fall into a few categories, just by the way we decide how and what to collect. You may find yourself in just one category or many, maybe even all of them. This example will pertain specifically to sports cards, but it could be modified for just about any collecting topic. I'm going to start from the broadest type of collector and work my way down. And remember these are just my musing and definitions on the subject.

The Hoarder or the everything collector. While rare there are those collector's that collect everything. Every sport, non-sport, food issue, and oddball. They all have a place in this collector's collection and this collector seldom sells or parts with anything from their collection.

The Sports Collector: A collector that specializes in collecting one or more sports. Of course this can also include non-sports topics as well as like Garbage Pail Kids, movie sets, and comic book sets.

The Team Collector: The team and sports collectors usually go hand in hand. Most of us don't collect everything from particular sport. We usually focus on a favorite team or two.

The Player Collector: Again there can always be overlap between types of collections. But also a player collection can be completely outside a collector's normal collecting theme. Let's say you collect Tigers cards, but also focus on Brett Favre football cards. Also while being a team collector you may focus on a specific player from your favorite team.

The Set Collector: A collector that likes to put together base or insert sets. Usually focusing on specific sports and/or brands.

The Hit Collector: A collector that collects "hits". Hits being defined as the added value content from sport card products. Namely autographs, relics, serial numbered cards, parallels, etc. Which leads us into the...

The Refined Collector: There is probably a much better title for this, but in my mind it's the type of collector that is very, very selective in their collection. Almost sometimes to the point of having a very well curated collection. This would be someone who targets high end autographs, relics, vintage, perhaps with graded examples. They maybe focusing on a long (or short term) investment. (We can argue about if prospectors are collector's, but I'm not going too). But these collections are usually small, but cards in the collection are very meticulously chosen for inclusion.

The Vintage Collector: A collector that focuses on vintage cards (define vintage however you like).

The Theme Collector: This is a collector that usually within the constrains of another part of their collection they've decided to start a collection with a theme. Like collecting baseball catchers, collecting cards that feature plays at the plate, card that have referees in the background. This would also cover collectors who make Frankensets.

And lastly I have a hard time coming up a type of collector for this. And maybe it's not so much a collecting type as an allowable exception we make for our collections. Let's call it the

Oddball Collector: Not a collector of oddball cards (I mean I guess it could be), but rather this refers to cards we have in our collection that fall outside the rules we impose upon ourselves. I call these cards my Keepers. Card that really don't fit in my general collection or collecting style, but are cool, maybe they have some sentimental hold.
As you can see the categories I came up with are pretty broad and under each of those collector's tend to refine their collections even more. Also, and I'm just speaking from my personal experience, our rules and habits tend to change over time, sometime shifting completely or become more refined and restrictive.

In the end though these are still just rules and usually very loose rules on how, why, and what we choose to collect. But I bet if you sit down and think about your collection you'll probably find yourself in here somewhere to some degree.

I've been collecting since I was about 14. So yikes that's been over 30 years now. I fall into multiple categories and some of those categories merge into each other.

I'm a sports collector focusing mainly on baseball and football, but I also love non-sports sets. Under that I collect Brewers and Packers cards mainly. I also have focused player collections under my team collections, my two main player collections for the two sports being Robin Yount and Brett Favre, but I also PC a couple guys outside my team parameters, like Reggie Jackson and Frank Thomas. All card types from my team and player collections have a place. I also consider myself a set collector although now I've refined my focus to mainly Topps flagship baseball (including update) and when Topps had football a flagship football set. I stopped set collecting football when Panini got the exclusive license (for the most part). And I have a bunch of oddball cards, my Keepers, that have a place in my collection as well. Like this sweet Rod Carew Patch card:

I'd love to know what rules you use for you collection. Do you have any crazy ones? Also if you think I missed anything leave a comment and tell me what it was.

In the end your collection is yours and meant to bring you enjoyment. So here's too all my fellow collector's and all your crazy rules.

cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3390422136858076282.post-42385645640779509482021-01-12T12:32:00.004-09:002021-01-12T12:32:26.193-09:00A Tour of the Sanctum Sanctorm at World Headquarters
Come take the grand tour and listen to me ramble.

cynicalbuddhahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13459221069829023793noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3390422136858076282.post-37320563487217377832021-01-10T19:39:00.000-09:002021-01-10T19:39:02.815-09:0011th Annual Almost the Easiest Super Bowl Contest on the Web - Wild Card Weekend Round Up

I have to say this was a pretty good weekend of football. We didn't lose too many people simply because the overwhelming majority of picks were for the #1 seeds in each conference and they, of course, got a bye this week. And how unexpected was the rout by the Browns! I missed the first 5 minutes of the game and the Browns were up 14 nothing.

Anyway, we lost four this round, but next weekend should be very entertaining. Thanks again to everyone who entered, I'll have another update post after the Divisional Games next week.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; I did have a couple people email me to tell me they couldn't sign up for some reason, so I've manually added them myself on the official sign up post. Second I want to thank the few of you that promoted the contest, either on your blogs or social media accounts, I appreciate getting the word out and I've added the PIMP next to your names to remind me to give you an extra entry into the door prize drawing. If you promoted the contest and forgot to post a link let me know and I'll make sure to mark your entry.

Here are the official signs up, if you see I made a mistake about your entry please let me know, otherwise enjoy the playoff. As I'm finally getting around to writing this post the Bills have just beat the Colt and boy that was a great game. And it doesn't affect this contest one bit because no one picked the Colts to win. Overall I see a lot of people predict the two #1 seeds going at it in the big game and that would be a hell of a Super Bowl, but any given Sunday or Saturday.

Josh D. - Kansas City Chiefs over Green Bay Packers - 48 points - 2 FG

The Angels In Order - Bills over Packers, 44 points, 3 FG.

John Sharp - Bucs over Ravens, 56 points, 3 FGs.

FiresNBeers - Packers over Bills, 52 points, 4 FGs - PIMP

GTT - KC Chiefs over Saints, 59 points, 4 FGs.

Scribbled Ink - Bucs over Bills, 55 points, 3 FGs

bakerybum - Packers over Titans, 52 points, 4 FGs

Robert - Packers over Chiefs. 65 points. 3 FGs

bbcardz - LA Rams over KC Chiefs, 59 points, 5 FGs

night owl - Bills beat Saints. 55 points. 4 field goals.

Shaw Racing - Bills over Bucs 50 5FGs

OhioTim - Pittsburgh Steelers over Green Bay Packers, 51 points, 3 field goals

jlcre2003 - Kansas City Chiefs over Green Bay Packers, 61 points, 4 FGs

KMack - Chiefs over Saints, 34-24. 3 FG's.

Adam - Cleveland Browns over Green Bay, 72 points, 5 FGs - PIMP

Corky - Seahawks over the Bills 63 total points and 4 FGs

cardboardhogs - Packers over Chiefs 63 total points and 3 FG’s

Fuji - Kansas City Chiefs over Green Bay Packers - 61 points - 4 FG - PIMP

kcjays - Kansas City over Green Bay - 65 points - 3 Field Goals

Dion's IP Autos only - KC Chiefs over GB Packers total of 69 points 2 Field Goals.

RunForeKelloggs - Bills over Packers; 68 points; 3 field goals

Nachos GrandeJanuary 5, 2021 at 3:02 PM

Steelers over Packers in a Super Bowl revenge. 48 total points, 2 field goals

abraham - Kansas City over Green Bay, 69 points, 1 field goal

Joseph Blaschke - Bills over the Saints; 53 total points. 4 FG's.

Ben Morris - Tampa Bay over Buffalo. 74 total points 5 FG

Johnny Crim - Green Bay Packers over Kansas City Chiefs, 66 points, 3 FGs

Ymmat - Bills over Packers. 55 points. 3 FG's.

The Diamond King - Packers over Chiefs, 64 points, 4 FG

Matt - Chiefs over packers 62 pts

Alan Deakins - Packers over Chiefs, 69 points, 2 FGS.....

gcrl - packers over bills, 58 points, 3 fg

shanepatrickwrites - Bills over Packers, 51 points, 3 fg's

Trevor P - Chiefs over Bucs, 55 points, 1 FG - PIMP

ketchupman36 - Seahawks over Titans. 40 points. 4 FG

Wilson - Baltimore Ravens over New Orleans Saints, 57 points, 4 Field Goals.

Jafronius - Packers over Chiefs, 57 points, 4 FGs.
