New Score hockey good for autographing or great for autographing?

I was sitting down last night sorting through my hockey cards, which I still need to collate, and a thought struck me with this years design.  They would look great with a black or blue Sharpe auto on them.

Here we see the Tom Gilbert card I posted earlier.  Nine white card stock with a matte finish.

Now the card with a photoshopped signature on it.  It works!! Mmmm. I might have to do some TTM's with some extras.

Another thought occurred to me as well.  I need to pick a team.  I really do enjoy hockey, I just can't get in to it though not having a team of my own.  I mean I love football and baseball.  The Brewers and Packers are my main teams.  I'm not a huge basketball fan, but I'll root for the Bucks, just don't ask me to buy any Panini cards.  But when it comes to hockey I have no one.  I love going to the local minor league team here in Anchorage.  They're not too bad.  As a matter of fact the Anchorage Aces won the league cup, the Kelly Cup, last year.  For the first goal they throw frozen salmon on the ice, which is then donated to the food bank.  No I need a team.  But I don't want to be a the guy who picks a team because they just won a championship, Steelers fans I'm looking you.  Wisconsin doesn't have a professional NHL hockey team.  Oh I've got 3 teams in the geographic neighborhood, the Red Wings, Blackhawks, and Wild all surround me.  And the Blackhawks and Red Wings have lots of great history being part of the original six.  And I like history. When I was younger I liked the Sharks, mainly for the logo, not for the teams skill.  I'm torn.

On the card front one fact remains, UD is still putting out high quality, beautiful hockey cards.  Say what you will about the company and it's questionable business practices, it can still put out  damn nice products.  And I'll say this Panini can do low end like a pro, it's the companies high end stuff that seems terrible.

Anywho, just thought I'd throw this out there.

Panini you do love me!!!

So awhile back I opened a crap load of Score Hockey.  I still need quite a few cards.  Stupid collation.  I do believe I busted 5 boxes or so.  And I got one rookie redemption out of all that.  And I finally got my redemption the other day.

I could have done worse.  A Minnesota boy, Derek played 2 years with the University of Wisonsin before going pro.  Not too bad of a rookie season so far either.

Try Harder

Or maybe you can call this 2011 Review Redux.....

2011 Topps..... I said I like it and I do. As the newness of it all has finally worn off and my rose colored glasses have shattered, I'm sitting here thinking of what I like and don't like.  I think I gave a fairly decent review of Topps.  I'll stand by my rating.  I mean if you're a set builder this is the set.  We get all caught up in the "hits" and rightfully so considering the cost of a box of baseball cards nowadays.  I would love to have hit a personalized 60th anniversary auto or some of the other goodies, but I didn't.

So lets talk about Topps "hits" this year.  On the jumbo box it clearly states that you will receive 1 Autographed card and 2 relics.

So when did a manufactured "relic" become a relic?  By definition a sports relic is something that was game used or at least associated with the game.  There were lots of controversy over Topps using pieces of seats in Babe Ruth relic cards and calling them relics.  And I'll call bullshit on that to.  While a piece of a Yankee Stadium Seat would be a fine relic in and of itself trying to make it represent something that it is not, is not acceptable.  The same goes for Manufactured "relics".  I like the Manu-patch, Manu-bats, and even to a point these new Manu-glove cards.  They are what they are.  But they are not Relics.  And I wouldn't even be the least bit pissed if Topps just stated on its Jumbo boxes, 1 Auto, 1 Relic and 1 Manufactured collectible.

Now lets get to brass tacks here.  The manufactured hat patches and bat barrels were a nice new concept collectible.  Well executed, if not well represented.  And while Topps put out a lot of subjects last year with hat patch and bat cards, some players had multiple designs, all the cards were numbered no higher than 99.

Here are a few examples

Remember these are the regular issue ones.  I don't think the Hat Patches had lower numbered parallels, but the bat barrels did.

Now this year.
No numbering.  And lets check out the quality.  This is a scan of the Cano I pulled from my box break.  Ignore the smudges that's from my scanner and the top loader.  But look at the stitching.

Here is the Topps teaser image release prior to the ship date
First, two things, yes this is a photoshopped image.  By Topps not me.  Second you'll notice that they took the Manufactured glove leather nameplate and changed it to just leather name plate.  And if you look at this card look how nice the lettering is.  Yes Topps did state that these would be stitched in their sell sheet but that stitching looks way nicer than the actual product, way nicer!  Look how crappy the pound sign is on the Cano card. And I doubt that it's real leather.  If it is it's super thin, it doesn't feel real.    And not being numbered means that these were produced in huge numbers.  And I guess they would have to be considering that according to the checklist there are only 50 subjects as opposed to the Hat Logo Patches that had 186 subjects alone in Series 1.

What I find most disappointing is Topps takes a neat idea and just drives it into the ground.  The hat patch and bat barrel cards were new, looked cool, and had new and old stars, variations, and were relatively scarce.

Yes the Leather Nameplates have numbered variations, but these are now the exception not the rule.  And I've mention this and so have quite a few other bloggers, the stitching looks cheap, shoddy, and poorly executed.  A stamped or branded name plate would have looked much nicer and probably have been a little higher quality. And hold on because we are going to get at least 50 more of these in Series 2.

Topps continues it's "free" giveaway with the Diamond Anniversary Giveaway.  I'm not sure when that site will start for business, probably in March after the MCG is done, but if it's anything like the Million Card Giveaway or the Gridiron Giveaway I would wait a while before trying to enter your codes, so the bugs get worked out.  I'll wait till I see what starts coming out of that to pass judgement.

The MCG started out hot and was a good idea, but one million 1987 cards later it doesn't seem so hot.  To be fair I didn't do too shabby with the codes I entered.  Yes there were quite a few 80's, 90's and 2000's in the mix, but the majority of my codes turned up 70's cardboard.  I got a few 50's and a handful of 60's.  I just got my cards in the mail, that's another post, but I'm not overly impressed with the quality of the cards I got.  I'm debating if it's worth having any more shipped to me or just saying screw it.

It seem by far that everyones favorite insert is the Kimball's Champions.  I knew I would be trying to put a set of these together when I saw them on the sell sheet.  I love minis and I love the retro inserts.  I'm still trying to finish my 2009 and 2010 Turkey Red sets.  I have a feeling that this might be even harder to finish as it seems everyone wants to collect these guys.  I have a want list up for my set if anyone has some they'd like to get rid of.  I didn't have a single double out of my 2 boxes so I got a nice 20 card base going.  Only 30 more to go.

We also have the Diamond parallels.  I guess these are officially Platinum Diamond Parallels.  Unnumbered, but oh so shiny. I like to call these the sparkle cards.

I won't lie I like the look of these cards and I'll be trying to put together a Brewers Team set but I won't be trying to complete a complete set.  I like the feel of these cards and there not bendy like Chrome.

I really enjoy the base design as well.  I think this is the most important for me as a set collector. Topps put together a really nice design this year.  And looking at the sparkle cards I think it should be a great Chrome set this year as well.  As long as Topps can fix it's Chrome warping problem.  I was just looking at some Chrome from last years set and they're starting to bend so bad I think they'll be able to roll around my deck like a toilet paper rolls pretty soon.  We can hope that gets taken care of.  And since Topps hasn't been coming out with a new Football design in years I would expect this to be the basic layout for 2011 Football too.  Maybe the circle with the logo will be a football and the back will have footballs instead of circles with the card number and player picture, but pretty much the same I would assume.  I wonder if the sparkle cards will carry over into football?  I will say I would like to see some new inserts in football this year.  Maybe not manufactured relics but something innovative would be nice.

Any comments are welcome.

My Top 5 Sets of last year. (Yours may differ)

Alright this is going to be a subjective list with no exacting criteria other than I liked it.  This is going to be an all sport top 5 as well.

Here.....we.......go

Coming in at #5 it's a tie and the only Panini products to make the list

Score Football and Hockey.   Why you ask is a $1.00 a pack products on the list? Because you could get hits like this....
I'm numbered to 10!!!

I also pulled a Timmons auto and a Hockey rookie redemption auto.  Plus Score football had lots of fun inserts and numbered parallels that made it fun to open.  The one draw back from hockey was the lack of numbered parallels and the few inserts.  Sorry rookies aren't inserts but still a fun set to put together and cheap.  And it didn't look half bad. Still need a  few Score hockey cards if you have them I sure we can work out a trade.

#4  My other Hockey obsession.  UD Champs Hockey.

I know this was from the 2009-2010 season but it came out around mid April last year.  Just gorgeous cards and on card autos.  The bad about his set was how few cards you got per pack and this is a set builders worst nightmare.  All cards in this set were part of the set.  Mini's, autos, relics all numbered into the set.  There was at least one guy I know from around here that was close to completing a master set but way too expensive for me.  But a great retro design and who doesn't love a set with dinosaurs.  Again looking to complete this set, check out the need list.

And speaking of dinosaurs that leads us into #3

Allen and Ginter.  Always a fan favorite it was highly anticipated and I pulled some nice stuff from it. Which I didn't scan but I got my first rip card from it and I can't believe I didn't rip it.  It was a Hanley Ramierez card and I think I ended up getting about 60 bucks for it so I was happy.  Never did find out what was inside.  Plus I think Monsters of the Mesozoic is my favorite insert set this year.  Plus the cards looked great as always.  I guess the only draw back is that they look very similar to the last 2 years but I love the card stock and these cards are great for getting autographed.  And I do love mini's.

#2 I'm not sure if I can count this as this year or not or if it came out just after New Years but since I won't remember it for next years top 5 I'm going to put it here.

Topps Magic football.  And it's even better this year.  With UD grabbing the NCAA license Topps couldn't use college uni's this year.  So we get our favorite stars in their pro uniforms.  Plus the art work for the cards is great.  I don't care how they did it, photoshop or whatever.  They look great, plus mini's!! I got insanely lucky and pulled an auto out of the first pack I picked up and ripped.  I promised myself I was going to be good and not buy anymore boxes till Series 1 comes out next month but it's so freaking tempting and I'd love to put this set together.  Maybe if box prices fall a few more bucks I might have to take the plunge.

And my #1 favorite set is....

Yep the product that probably should have just been called Stadium Club.
I mean come on these cards are beautiful, the design great, and the hits can be awesome.
A great full bleed photo the name, team logo, and topps logo don't interfere at all.  And the photos are kick ass.

One of my first packs I pulled this..

And then I ended up picking up a pack for a redemption card and pulled this...

Best hit of the year, except maybe for my Score Manning auto.
I would love put a set of this together but it's way too pricey for me to try.  There is the option of putting a retail set together as it considerably cheaper, but retail cards are printed on thinner card stock.

I was thinking of doing a worst card sets of the year but I think that would be dominated by Panini.
Lets hear what your top 5 or 1 favorite card products of the year were.

2010-2011 Score Hockey 3 box break and some rack packs

I'm not a hockey guy.  But I've finished my Topps Football and Baseball sets and I'm not impressed with the Panini Football offerings but I love Score.  Well at least this year I love Score. I my opinion Score football was Panini's best football release and this year they are putting out a Hockey too so for 30 bucks a box I want to try and do something I haven't done in a long time.  Put a hockey set together.
So I opened one box and couldn't help but go and get 2 more after that to see if I could hit an auto.

So here's what I got out of the three boxes and two rack packs.

I got 3 of these 20th anniversary cards in the boxes and one in a rack pack.
I'll probably end up buying out the Target near my house of rack packs.

The main insert other than rookies is the Playoff Heroes.  I actually got 18 of these 2 double not pictured and getting close to finishing this set.

My favorite insert in the set are the Net Cam cards these are sweet I love the angle and the picture.

One of the rarer inserts falling at one per box is the Franchise.

The second of the one per box inserts is the Sudden Death inserts.  I actually pulled 2 from one box but it was instead of a Snowglobe.  I like the layout of these, but that Giroux card is the dumbest picture on a card.
My second favorite set are the Snowglobes, Die cut and all snowy.
In the retail rack pack you also get 2 exclusive inserts. One Canadia Greats and one USA Greats.  There are 15 cards per set but the Panini Website only lists the Canada Greats checklist, no USA checklist for me.  I've added a few more of these as the hobby boxes are gone in town so I've been the rack packs.

I didn't get an auto but that's a case hit.  I did get a rookie redemption, which oddly enough is not a redemption card, but the actually card of the player, and I forgot to scan it.  I do believe you could call them SSP's but it looks like there are no actual redemption cards.

So I've ripped 3 hobby boxes and about 6 rack packs and still don't even have a base set and I'm quite a few short on the Rookies.  I also have a ton of glossy which honestly are dumb.  Just give me an extra regular card.  I guess I could try and finish my set with glossies but I'm a purest and a glossy set is a glossy set and a regular set is a regular set.
Unlike Score football there are no numbered parallels in this set.  As a matter of fact unless the Autos are numbered, which I didn't get one of, there are no numbered cards in this set.

If you need some cards to fill your set I'll have my need list and maybe have my extras listed as well soon.
