Trade post with Adam from Thoughts and Sox

This story starts with a quest.  A quest for a rainbow of parallels.  Of one of my favorite players...Rollie Fingers.  A few months back I ended up acquiring Rollie's blue parallel 2012 Topps Tribute.  But along for the ride was a Dustin Pedroia blue parallel as well.  The seller had paired them up for the auction.  I'm guessing he figured maybe it would appeal to someone trying to put the blue set together.  Anyways I ended up winning the auction for the minimum bid.  So the Blue Rollie was mine, as well as the Blue Pedroia.  So I emailed Adam over at Thoughts and Sox to see if he would like the card.  He said yes he most definately was interested but it would be a while he had just moved and all his cards were boxed up. I wasn't worried.  I promptly sent Adam a package.  Now if you know me, I hate to send just one card in the mail. But for the life of me other than that Pedroia card I can't remember what I sent Adam. Anyways I promptly sent off a package and then promptly forgot about it.

That was until the other day when I had a nice think padded envelope show up in my mail box.  At first I thought  "Oh crap did I forget a trade?" But then I remembered.  Anyways Adam sent me a crap load of cards.

So here are most of them.
A couple of Bo Jackson cards for my PC.  That 2009 tribute card is sweet.

A few vintage Brewers...some 71's and...
a 1975 George Scott.
Some Heritage
And a Prince Fielder rookie.
A nice smattering of Paullie Mo's
A few Younts.
A couple of Sheffields, that 89 is actually a reprint from 2010 Topps.
A couple Turkey Reds
A Braun card.
Some CC. Man I really like these Sweet Spot cards.
And lastly a couple numbered parallels.  The Gallardo is #d to 599 and the Escobar is 2011.
There were a few others I've already put away.
Thanks Adam.

Screw Linsanity, it's almost time for Baseball!

I had this whole diatribe about Linsanity written up and then erased it all.  I understand why it's happening and I guess for a struggling NBA, with attendance down, a lock-out shortened season, basketball fans and for that matter owners and players need something to believe in. They need that underdog story.

Alright that's all I'm going to say on that.  I have a few cool cards I want to show off.

First is a card that I wish I'd have pulled 3 years ago.  I was in Colbey's group break over at Cardboard Collections this month. He broke a jumbo box of 2012 Topps and a box of 2009 Topps Ticket to Stardom.  I didn't really get anything great out of the Jumbo box, pretty much a team set and a couple inserts, but I took one of the big hits from the Ticket to Stardom box.  The really big hit was a Dustin Pedoria auto relic card, but I think a got a nice close second.

A dual relic ticket stub of the pudgy new Tiger himself.

Numbered to 228 to boot.  I think this was my first hit in all the group breaks I've taken part of.  Pretty sweet.  Thanks Colbey.

Next is a 2012 Topps card.

I ended up picking up two Retired Rings cards from the Jumbo packs I opened and I was hoping to get a pin card as well.  The checklist only has two guys I really wanted out of Series One.  The first is Reggie Jackson, which I haven't gone after yet, and this one....

I would have loved to get Paulie Mo in a Brewers uni, but alas the Brewers have never won a World Series.  Paul got close in 1982, but  it was 11 years later he helped the Blue Jays do it.  I'm not a huge Molitor collector, but I'll take a cool card when I can get it cheap.  And these cards are pretty cool in hand.

What am I going to do?? I'm going to make it official!!! A Prince Fielder post!

I have to say I was pretty surprised the Tigers managed to scoop up Prince Fielder the other day.  I had no illusions that he would be coming back to Milwaukee.  I kept reading the scuttlebutt on who was wooing him and the speculation on where he would end up. I have a couple of buddies who are Tigers fans and they where going crazy!  Like the prodigal son coming home and taking his rightful place on the throne.  Right where his daddy played.  Of course it's common knowledge that Prince and his dad Cecil don't have a very good relationship, but I'm pretty sure every Tigers fan was pretty happy with the news.

AJ over at his blog The Lost Collector posed an interesting question. What do you do when one of your favorite players or a player you have a PC for goes to a new team?  And it's great timing because when I heard the news yesterday it's exactly what I thought about my Prince Fielder collection.  I never officially had him as a personal PC.  If you've read the blog before you'll notice I didn't have him up on the Who I Collect.  Sure he gets collected by default since he was a Brewer.  It got me thinking why when he was obviously one of the two best players on the team didn't I have a PC for him?  I don't know. I mean it's not like I didn't collect him, I have a huge stack of Prince Fielder cards and some really nice stuff too. Maybe it's that I didn't need another focus.   But I've decided to make it official and I've made my decision on the fate my collecting Prince Fielder.  He shall be added!  And I do plan to keep collecting his cards.  So it's official.  Prince now has his name officially up on the side board of Who I Collect.  I really don't know why it took him signing with another team to get me to take the plunge.  I guess it also begs the question if he had gone to another team would I still feel the same way?  I guess we'll never know.   I wish him all the best and I hope he has a great long career with the Tigers.

Cynicalbuddha's Top 100 #29

I really love this card.  Maybe it's because I got it cheap, maybe it's because it's got Princy on there, maybe it because it's a rookie auto.  I was just window shopping one day on ebay and came across this card, ended up bidding on it and stealing it.  It also helped I picked this up off season.  Whatever the reason my one and only Prince Fielder auto is in the Top 100.

#29 on the Top 100

2011 Bowman (A Collector's Crack Day Late and a Dollar Short review)

I went down to Don's, one of my LCS's in the area last Wednesday, and no Bowman, Don said that he got an email from Topps and the cards would be in tomorrow.  It was too bad to because that Wednesday was trade night at Don's and I'm sure he would have sold out of it. But I went down there after work on Thursday and lo and behold boxes of freshly opened Bowman. Don prices stuff on his costs and since this was the first batch and it was bought at introductory levels, that means that packs and boxes prices weren't threw the roof, yet.  I decided to pick up a couple jumbo packs of Bowman and play the Harper lottery.  I also picked up a Kimball Champions Mantle card from this years Topps for my Kimballs set. This was a score because everywhere I look people want at least 6 bucks for this card and I got it for cheap.

But, I digress, so late as always here is my two cents on this years Bowman.  It's as crappy as the last few years.  I remember talking to Don about how much money he's lost on Bowman over the years.  The only reason he made money last year was because of Strasmania and he'll sell out of Bowman this year due to the Harper lottery. I remember trying to put a Bowman set together a few years back and thinking this is terrible.  I mean the multi-numbering system.  More on that later, lets look at the cards and inserts I pulled and what I think.

Here is the base veteran card.  I opened the first pack and got this and one other Brewer coming up and thought man I just need to stop.  I was also going to pick up a rack pack of Retail to compare but couldn't find any.

The base rookie out of the main 220 card set.  Both of which aren't terrible, but not particularly great.

The regular Bowman Prospect's card.  Kinda looks like last years design.
Bowman Prospect's Chrome.

Bowman gold parallels.  One per pack, jumbo and regular hobby.  If you looking for these best to buy smaller, cheaper packs.

I also got one orange parallel.  These are numbered to 250 I do believe.

Oh is that candy??!!
This was actually the first card I saw when I opened my first pack.  Score!  Since I officially decided to be a Braun supercollector, any pack pulls are always welcome.  I think I like this insert set the best, I just wish this card would have been chrome etched like the originals.  These are on foil board and look like something Panini would put out.

My 2 Topps 100 cards.
And Topps of the Class.

There are a few more inserts in this set that I didn't get any of and I'm looking for a Braun Finest Future's insert if anyone has one to trade.

Now I realize that this review is only based on two jumbo packs, and to be honest I would have liked to bust a box to get a full feel, but I'm not dropping 150 bucks on a jumbo box on a set I don't want to collect.  A few observations first,  I wish Topps would just return to numbering all the cards into the set.  I don't mind the Bowman Chrome parallels or all the other color parallels.  It does seem like in Bowman, Topps takes the parallels to the extreme with the sheer numbers of different color parallels and refractors, but I actually like having cards to chase of certain players, and I understand that a lot of people like to pick up the prospect cards of future MLB players, so Bowman has it's place to that extent.  But as a set collector this set is a no go.  I mean I guess if I cared I could try to just put the base 220 card set together or go after the prospect set or the chrome prospect set but all of them together gets a bit overwhelming.  I think it would just be a better product if all the prospects were numbered in to a 500 card set, or what ever size set. Hell you could do what Upper Deck did with Champ's and number in every card issued into the set and really piss set collectors off. That and the price point for this product is way to high.  Topps has got super lucky with Strasmania and the Harper Lottery the last two years to make this product a success, but lets be honest the only reason anyone bought this product last year and this year were to try and snag some Strasburgs and Harpers.

That doesn't mean I won't be trying to put a Brewer's set together. I will.  One of my goals was to complete a team set from all the offerings this year, not the super premium sets, but that would be nice too.

That being said Bowman is what it is and if you enjoy what it has to offer that's great.  To me I think my two packs of Jumbo will be all that I purchase and I'll be tracking down the remaining Brewers cards I need for my set through trades, ebay and other outlets.

I'm giving this product two Meh's.
Again I suppose if I'd had opened a full box, or pulled a sweet auto out of this product I might be a little more hot on this, but from what I've seen on the forums and blogs, no one is super excited about Bowman itself just the Harper and a few other prospects.

Man it's getting boring going to go to the card shop and some Trade night pick ups.

Well I went to Don's Sportscard Trade night the other night.  Both card shops in town do this.  Bosco's on the first Wednesday and Don's usually a Wednesday in the middle of the month.  Both nights I walked out barely buying anything.  At Bosco's I literally left with out purchasing a single trading card but I did pick up a few comics.  There just hasn't been anything I want to buy and with Heritage prices going threw the roof again this year and Tribute topping 70 bucks a pack, no thank you, there's not really much to buy for a baseball/football collector.  Sorry UD Football with pros in college uni's doesn't count, at least not in my book.  So there I was looking through Don's dropboard seeing if there was anything that peaked my interest and looking through his 1972 Topps Baseball for some Brewers to help me finish my set.   I did manage to find a few things to take home with me.  This is exactly what happened last year and why I ended up spending so much money on Heritage.  Boredom with the hobby.  Topps exclusive severely limits what I can buy which is too bad.  Yes there is new Basketball and Hockey, but those are both sports I really don't collect. Enough with the soap box here's what I picked up.

First I found a nice 1971 Topps Football game Bradshaw for about 2 bucks.  I really like these cards and the only other one I have is the Bart Starr.  I really want to get my hands on a Willie Wood as well.

Got me a Favre for  the old Favre collection.  Even if it is in those awful colors.  Another buck off the dropboard.

A Prince Fielder/Pablo Sandoval 2010 Bowman Sterling Dual Relic unnumbered.  For 3 bucks I couldn't pass it up.

I also grabbed three MSA blank back discs of Johnny Bench, Mike Schmidt and Tony Perez, each a buck.

I also grabbed 4 1972 Brewers cards for my team set and I decided to splurge on a pack of UFC Knockout.
I have to say if I followed UFC more, I have friends who are nuts for it, I would definitely go after these cards and the other UFC sets.  I pulled 2 numbered cards, one of Dan Hardy, who I actually know who he is, and this guy.

I ain't complaining, but for 25 bucks a pack I won't be going after this set.  Maybe I'll see if I can pick one up on ebay for cheap.

cb out.
