A big year end thank you

It's just like the Beatles said, "You complete your junk wax sets with a little help from your blogging friends." I'm paraphrasing of course, but over the last month I've had some immense help with some late 80's, early 90's Topps junk wax sets.  I'm now the proud owner of 1987, 1988,. 1989, and 1990 complete sets.

And the best part is most of the trades were with guys I'd never traded with. I love adding new traders to my notebook.
If you've ever traded with me you're in here. I know old school. But it's nice I have names, addresses, blogs, what you collect, sometimes I even remember to write down the date of the trade and what we traded, all in one place. I also tend to keep all my trade emails in a folder in my email account.

So while I don't have any pictures of those trades and what we trade for, because really it was just 80's Topps cards mostly, I do want to say thanks.  So thank you Bert, Edgar, Jeff, Chris, and Ken for some great year end trades and to everyone else who traded with me this year.. I'm hoping to have everyone's packages in the mail by the end of this week I promise.

I'm glad I was able to get a few in before my man cave was totally disassembled.  I've been slowly moving boxes and boxes out to the shed.  Not the ideal place to store my collection, but I've got no choice. My wife was nice enough to allow me a large shelf to put some stuff on inside. So that'll be occupied by my PC's and a few boxes of sets I'm working on and a box of my  other non PC or team set cards that are too valuable to put out in the cold.

But if I don't post before Christmas, Happy Holidays to everyone. And remember after next Sunday the 4th Annual Almost the Easiest Super Bowl Contest on the Web will start.

Cheers

A Swing and a Big Ass Trade

I love finding new blogs and I love finding new trading partners even more.  I recently entered a contest over at Swing and a Pop-Up. The contest was actually pretty hard and I didn't win, but Bert the proprietor of the blog emailed me with a trade proposition. He told me he could put a huge hurt on some of my set needs especially the 80's and 90's Topps.  Boy he wasn't kidding.

Some trades are glamorous, exchanging cool autos or relics and other trades are more blue collar.  And I've been in both and I'll take a good old blue collar, knock a few hundred cards from my needs list trades any day.

Bert ended up sending me a mostly full 800 count box full of late 80's goodness.

I don't know if you can tell from the edges but there was a nice stack of 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1990 Topps in there and a huge stack of 1989 and 1992 Topps.
He also included a couple 1981 cards and a nice stack of Brewers cards for my Brewers team sets.
I'm still working through it all, but I did manage to update my need list. All those sets are now much more manageable. I figure I'll should be able to knock off almost all my late 80's and 90's sets with my next Justcommons.com purchase.

This has been one of my more epic trades and I'm glad I got at least one more off before most of my collection gets mothballed later this month to start working on the nursery.  Thanks again Bert.

I'll try to keep this list updated as best I can.

I also have a few Brewers needs for my master team set.

Trade shout out and contest announcement.

First off, Wow have you been paying attention to the wild card playoff race?!!!! Holy crap, one game left and it's tied in both the NL and AL.

Second, a big thank you to Tony from the Common (Card) Man for helping me with my Kimball Champions and 2011 Allen and Ginter sets.  Both of which are now complete, except for the SP's, but I've got those lined up. I think.

Thirdly, I'm planning a World Series contest much like my Super Bowl contest.  But since I can't list all the teams with the wild card still undecided I have to wait for the full announcement.  And who knows maybe we might have to go to a one game playoff in both leagues! The prizes: Baseball cards of course!

Another great trade with Plaschke, Thy Sweater is Argyle

Taking a break from my top 100 to recognize another great trade with Greg who writes the blog Plaschke, Thy Sweater is Argyle.  Greg was putting together a Manny Ramirez rookie set and need one more, one I had, one I didn't mind trading away.  I ended up picking up two of these from an old school break of 1992 Pinnacle Jumbos.   And since I hate single card trades we worked out something a little more substantial.  I set some random Dodger singles and a stack of 2011 A & G he needed.  And let me just say there are a lot of Dodger bloggers out there. It's hard to keep those things in stock.  Anyway, I got my package from Greg the other day.  He sent me one Ginter I needed a couple random cards for my team sets and the meat.

2000 UD Pros and Prospects Ben Sheets Team USA card numbered!!! to 1600.

2011 Gypsy Queen Prince Fielder framed relic.  Ah I'm going to miss you Princy.

Probably the one card I was looking forward to getting was this Flight to 420 Brett Favre chrome refactor.  I'm slowly trying to put together a set of both the regular and chrome versions of this set, I will get a checklist up sometime soon, so if you have any of these lying around put them in a stack with my name on it.

I've only picked up a few of these refractors, the base like this one or the rarer white ones, they are way to expensive for me to try and chase but I'll take'em whenever and where ever I can get them.  But the best card was this one he added for some filler.

A 1990 Pro Set Alan Veingrad card.  Three things are pretty great about this photo.  One, it looks like Veingrad is getting face masked, two it looks like Alan is getting his ass kicked and three that's the magic man Don Majkowski in the background about to throw the ball.  I think the 49er is Daniel Stubbs.

Thanks Greg.

Your not going to read this Trade post.

Wow I've really not had much to blog about.  I'm not planning on buying much Gypsy Queen.  Maybe a few packs, but seeing as I'm in A Cardboard Problems group break so hopefully I'll get some goodies outta that.  No boxes for me, especially at over a hundred bucks a pop.  I'm saving up for Series 2 and maybe some A&G.

But before my vacation I posted my box break of my one box of Heritage and I stated I had no intent on putting this set together and Jeremy over at No One's Going to Read This Blog asked if he could have the Mets and Team cards I had pulled.  After a few emails back and forth after I got back from my trip we worked out a deal.  I sent him all the Heritage he wanted and went through his needs lists and filled a good amount.  Well yesterday I got home and had a nice little package waiting for me.

Jeremy sent me a few cards from my needs list.  A few 2010 Heritage, 2009 T206, 2010 Topps inserts, and some random and very nice Brewers and Packers cards which don't need to be shown here but were very much appreciated.  He also sent me these goodies for my PC's and team collections.

First we have a few minis. Have I mentioned I love mini's?  You know what else I like shiny!!  Hey Topps how about some shiny minis???!!! Na probably not a good idea they would probably curly up like a piece of bacon.

Speaking of shiny.
Topps Chrome Johnny McNally card.

A Favre Flight to 420 chrome card.

2011 Heritage Refractor of Rickie Weeks.

This card didn't scan shiny, but it is.

Jeremy also sent along some nice parallel cards for me.
A couple 2009 Topps Gold and..
a Ryan Braun 2010 Topps Opening Day Blue Parallel.  If you haven't noticed I officially have added Ryan to my list of Player Collections.  I did a big write up about it over at my Brewers blog Miles from Miller. Now that Mr. Braun will be a Brewer until at least 2020.  This means I will actively try to acquire and will trade for relics, autos, ect outside of just collecting him for team sets.  I already had a nice collection of Braun cards in my Brewers collection and have been picking up cheap cards of his here and there, I also got a nice lot from Brian at 30 year old Cardboard a while back.

Jeremy also sent this bad boy along.  Nothing like a new Big Hurt card to add to the collection.  Frank and Bo are two very passive player collections.  They are two players I loved watching growing up.  I'm not really a White Sox or Royals fan, although I'm not a hater either, but the first real Major League game I ever went to was a New Comisky Park after my dad retired from the military.  Long story, but I got to see Frank play and watched as the Sox came back down from 7 runs to actually win the game!  I do believe that was back in 1992! Man the years fly by.

I think the best card that Jeremy sent along and was a total surprise was this bad boy.
If your wondering what the hell is that a custom of I'll tell ya.  I've been drawing comics since high school and was fairly seriously thinking of heading that direction in life when a guidance councilor told me not to make something I love to do something I had to do.  So instead of getting an art degree I went and got a Biology degree.  I still like to draw and have books and books of doodles.  A lot of my comics come from doodles that eventually get fleshed out and worked on.  One of those ideas came from a group of doodles of superhero objects.  I was reading Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins at the time and if you haven't read it some of the main characters are inanimate objects, which kinda put this thought in my head.

You can read the comic that I came up with here at the 13 Tenets.

While your there you can explore a lot of my other comic strips.  In the Legion of Extraordinary Objects there's a little guy named Samurai Mushroom.  I actually had a friend commission a strip of the Samurai Mushroom on his own and that snowballed into a series, which of course I never published until I started posting it at the 13 Tenets.

Whew.  Anywho, thanks Jeremy what a great trade!!!

What a great mail day.

I was walking out to put my Netflix in the mail hoping to get there before the mailman did, I missed him, damn, but in the box was a great haul.

I start off with my winnings from Community Gums contest.  This was a while ago but they wanted you to guess what cards would be pulled out of a 2008 Topps Moments and Milestone box.  I picked the Prince Fielder 50 home runs cards and I think I picked card 47 or something.  Well there was on Prince Fielder in there homer #8 and I just got it in the mail.  Thanks to Jon over at Community Gum
While I was never a big fan of the set, I mean there a billion cards in it, I don't mind a Princey #d to 150.

Next I noticed that Tony over at the Common Card Man posted the trade he and I just did.  He had a huge need list and contacted me back in December right before I moved if I wanted to do a trade.  I had blogged about how many Topps extras I had sitting around and he wanted to know if I could fill some holes.  And fill I did, but I'm bummed I couldn't wipe out the whole need list I tried my damnedest.  I also knew from emailing back and forth we mailed on the same day and it looks like we got our packages on the same day as well.  Here's a sampling of what he sent.

He sent some nice set filler for me.  This isn't the whole trade just a nice sample.  I guess the best part about putting up my active needs list is that in a trade if you have a couple cards I need here or there it all works out and Tony gave me a little from column A and a little from column B and it all adds up.  Thanks Tony.

And last but certainly not lease I got my swag from Colbey's poor mans group break over at Cardboard Collections.  I love these suckers.  I try to get the Brewers whenever I can.  For 6 bucks shipping included its hard to pass up. Here are some of the highlights

Colbey also sent along some stuff for my Player collections.  I think the best haul out of the Group Break was that OPC Fingers.  Nothing like a Pack fresh card.  Awesome centering super sharp corners and I'm pretty sure I needed it for my PC. And i got lucky and won one of the raffles and got the Nomar up there.   Thanks Colbey.

Alright off to work off my beer calories for tomorrow.

A trade with Colbey from Cardboard Collections

About a week or so ago Colbey left a comment that he had pulled a numbered Favre cards from Topps Unrivaled and if I wanted it, it was mine.  Well after looking at his trade list I asked if he'd like to do a larger trade.  I had a bunch of Braves mini's, and some Panthers stuff.  Mainly a nice Epix Tony Pike auto and other misc.  So after a few emails it was set and I came home tonight and found a nice package in my mailbox.

It was loaded with Brewers cards, plus some Turkey Reds I needed to help finish my 09-10 inserts sets, and one lone National Chicle that I needed, but every little bit helps.

Here are some of the goodies he sent.

Now I'm sure most people are looking to sell off their Farve collections right now or archiving it till the memory fade of his last year and all the BS that went with it, but for me I never closed the box.  So here is the card that started the whole thing.  I had the unnumbered base card, so this is a nice addition.  I've been getting lucky either ripping or finding them for cheap at the LCS in the recently opened piles on the counter, so I have quite a few 2010 Favres already.  I hate to see him in purple but I find it hard to hate the man that took my team to 2 Super Bowls in my lifetime even if he's being a bit of a premadonna.

When I say Colbey sent me a pile of Brewers I mean a pile,  I won't bore you with all the cards just some of the neat ones.  In the stack nestled like a couple caught in a snow storm was this little surprise.

Why it's Mr. Sheets.  Ben is currently or at least this year he was with the Oakland A's.

Also in the stack were a ton of premium cards from various sets.  I'm pretty sure most of what I got constitutes the team set for most of them or at least is close.

In there was  A Piece of History, Timeline, and SP Legendary Cuts and a nice die cut Braun.
Speaking of Die cuts check out this puppy.

This is the master of all die cuts.  I don't think I ever ripped a pack of this stuff in the day. I'm sure it was super pricey but that whole right where it's dark is die cut, or laser cut, or whatever.  I had to go look this set up. It's 1996 Topps Laser to see if all the cards were like this or if this was an insert and I do believe that this is a Power Cuts insert.

After that the rest of this post is pretty anticlimactic but in the pile were these two

2009 Upper Deck Documentary.  For some reason UD has been producing monster insert sets the last couple of years.  They did it with their Yankee Stadium Legacy and that other one, which I can't remember off the top of my head, you know the one I mean, one of the ugliest insert sets ever.  Although they did have a few Rollie Fingers and Robin Yount cards in it so it wasn't too bad.

Oh CC we hardly got to know you.

And a couple 2009 Topps retro logo( or umbrella logo if you prefer)  cards.  I do believe these were Target exclusives or something like that.  There on retro card stock too.

I don't want to make light of all the rest of the cards but there pretty much all base stuff, I'm sure they will fill many holes in my team collections and I have to say what a great trade.

Thanks Colbey hope you like the cards I sent.  Check out Colbey's blog Cardboard Collections.
